I’m overjoyed that we’re going to be together again! I can’t wait to preach to faces again and not stare into my own face in the selfie mode of an iPhone while preaching!
You’ve heard me say before that when I preach that I’m not just preaching to you but that I’m preaching to myself as well, but that has never been truer than it has been lately. I have, quite literally, been preaching to myself.
The other night, Kendall was watching one of my sermons on our television after we had put the kids to bed. I was in the room as well. She suddenly said to me, “If you say amen to yourself one more time, I’m turning it off!”
Joking aside, I have been giving a lot of thought to the well-being and the future of the church. This is a great time of opportunity, but many opportunities are passed up because they have the distinct smell of hard work attached to them.
What kind of opportunities? Ministry opportunities. Too many people today look for a church that has a lot of established programs in place when they are choosing where to worship.
I understand that. Having children, I want our church to have a good, established youth ministry. As a man, I want our church to have a good, established men’s ministry. As a husband, I want there to be a good, established women’s ministry for my wife. As a member of a church that is multi-generational, I want our church to have a good, established fellowship that includes all ages.
I recognize the efforts that many of you have been putting forth for years. I applaud and appreciate you. In all of the ministry areas I’ve mentioned, I’ve seen some good things. But as a whole, we can do and be so much more.
Those churches that we admire that have such great programs, we have to realize, those came about from people who were willing to put forth the effort to make them happen. And hear me church – the work of the church is not about talent – it’s about hard work.
I want to hear from you. What can we do? How can we do it? Let’s make plans and take steps to make great things happen. What is God calling you to do? How can I help you make that happen?
The world is increasingly evil and the church is fading into the background. Now is our time to shine. Now is our time to live out our faith. Don’t let this world discourage you. Jesus said that one person with faith the size of mustard seed could move mountains (Matthew 17:20).
Be the one.
