The First Four Words

To me, some of the most important words in the Bible are the first four, Genesis 1:1,

In the beginning God…

Almost every day I see a new article about the origin of the universe and all things in it.  None of the articles will even consider that the possibility that there is a God, and by extension of His existence, the possible creator of all things.

Oftentimes, the Bible is attacked as not giving “scientific evidence.” What people fail to understand is that it was never intended to provide any kind of “scientific evidence.”  The Book of Genesis was written by Moses to a nation of people who knew God existed.

It would have been a ridiculous idea to make arguments to convince people who were delivered out of slavery in Egypt by supernatural means that God existed.

So thousands of years later, here I sit, enduring article after article about how everything we know started somehow with nothing.  That’s right.  The leading theory of the origins of the universe is that everything came from nothing.

What can we do about this?  Simply put, we combat error with truth.  I’m not saying to become an expert in biblical apologetics, I’m simply saying that, when given the opportunity, we share what the Bible says.

Paul taught us a very important thing regarding this in Romans 1:19-20 when he wrote,

…that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

There are a couple of things here that I want you to see.  One, is that God has made it evident to man that He exists by means of making it, evident within them.  Paul is referring in vs 19 to what we call the conscience.  The conscience is a gift from God that serves not only to help us understand right from wrong, but also serves as evidence of God’s existence.

Two, in vs 20, Paul tells us that God is clearly seen in creation, through what has been made.  And it’s because God gave us a conscience and allowed us to observe creation, that Paul says of all people, they are without excuse when it comes to believing in God.

It’s encouraging to me that it’s not my responsibility to convince people that God exists.  But that does not relieve me of my responsibility to share what the Bible says, because believing that God exists is not enough to save anyone.

What I encourage you to do is to share what the Bible says.  It’s not a mere book.  It’s a supernatural book.  It is alive.  It does God’s good work.

Kindly, and respectfully, answer those who have questions, but when God is rejected, understand it’s not your fault.  To God, all are without excuse.  All of mankind have a responsibility to seek truth.  Our part is to share it when we can.

Thanks for bearing with me as I attempt to share God’s good words with you!

Much love!
