Passing It On

One of the most neglected disciplines in our current world is the passing on of knowledge.  The reason that I call it a discipline is because the passing on of what we know often does not come naturally, or easily, but rather, through deliberate, and intentional effort.

But why?  Why does our knowledge so often not get passed on naturally?  I’ll suggest a couple of reasons.  For one, the passing on of knowledge is difficult.  You know this already.  There are some things that you know very well, but when you consider how to teach somebody else what you know, you suddenly find yourself frustrated at not knowing how to communicate the information.  Too often, in our frustrations, we give up.

Another obstacle is that, often, people are resistant to learning.  You have great information to pass on.  Useful, insightful, and beneficial information, but people rebel against your instruction.  Again, it’s too easy in these instances to throw up your hands and give up trying.

Sometimes it’s not so negative.  Sometimes the information that you want to pass on is simply information that is outside of the area of interest of the people or person you’re sharing it with.

With lots of different types of information, not passing it on is acceptable.  But there is some information that is unacceptable to not pass on.

Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.  These words, which I am  commanding you today, shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise…”

Moses goes on from here with a greater description in his instructions from God, but the gist of the message is, “PASS THIS INFORMATION ON.”  The information that we have not choice not to pass on is the knowledge of God in the Bible.

My father was a mechanic.  He didn’t pass that information on to me, which causes some minor inconveniences for me at times, but in the grand scheme of life, is not a big deal.

But if some faithful people would not have passed on to me the knowledge of God, my soul could have been lost.  That’s what’s at stake.

So, it doesn’t matter how difficult it is.  It doesn’t matter how resistant the students may be.  It is our duty to pass on the knowledge of God.  This is God’s most frequently chosen avenue to make Himself known to the world.

I encourage you to consider these things and prayerfully consider how you might share with others the knowledge of God that has been entrusted to you.

Much Love!
