Large Versus Small

The summer between my freshman and sophomore years in high school, my mother and I moved from a larger town to a smaller town.

Athletically speaking, I went from a baseball team with twenty players, to a team with only nine.  And just in case you aren’t familiar with baseball, there are nine defensive positions on a baseball field.

I guess I shouldn’t brag about having had a starting position.

My father lived in another town, but very close to the town that my mother and I lived in, so I had a choice to either go to school and play baseball in the town that my mom lived or in the town that my dad lived.

In my dad’s town, the baseball team consistently competed in the state championship, and, the greatest compliment of my baseball career came when I was asked by the coach of that team if I would come and play catcher for them.

I chose instead to play with the smaller team in my mom’s town.  Why?  Mainly because I wanted to play with a team that needed me more.

This was on my mind because I recently visited a large church.  I was there for a funeral service, and, looking around the room at the many church members, I couldn’t help but think about how I wish more people would choose to be a part of smaller teams, churches that is, instead of larger ones.

At larger congregations, there aren’t as many opportunities to serve, which can be frustrating.  At smaller congregations, like ours, there are plenty of opportunities.  If you are a part of this body of believers and are not serving in some capacity, it’s not because there isn’t anything for you to do.

If you are searching for ways that you can serve here, but don’t know where to begin, just come and let me know and I promise we will help find a service to the Lord that you can call your own.

God has created you to do good works in His Kingdom for His glory.  Let’s discover and do those works together, for our good and for His glory.

Much love!
