Busy Busy Busy

I often find myself asking myself the question, “How did I get myself into this situation?” But I’m not talking about bad situations, I’m simply talking about busyness.  At what point does a person become too busy though?

Somehow, every day on my calendar, for seemingly the entire summer, has become filled with obligations.

Summer camp, a mission trip, a family vacation, doctor appointments, dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, kid activities, educational activities, visiting in-laws, VBS, ministry activities, etc.

I think Kendall and I are careful to not commit ourselves and our children to activities that are not good activities, but how do we find a healthy balance of activity and inactivity?

I want to spend more one-on-one time with each of my five kids and my wife; I feel guilty that I don’t spend enough time with anybody.

There’s also my job, which understandably takes the bulk of my time, home chores, which admittedly is only the lawn, taking out the trash and very little laundry, but even with very limited chores, I find myself fighting to find the time to keep up.

I like to play golf every once in a while too, and, before you object, consider that Dave needs extra ministry!  Sorry Dave.  Truth be told, Dave ministers as much, or more to me than I do for him.

I say all of this to say, I don’t have any grand solutions.  But what running out of time is causing me to do, maybe for the first time in my life, is to think harder about the consequences of obligating myself to anything and everything.

My grandpa used to say, “If you have a chance to get some land, do it; They’re not making any more of it.”  I’ve never really had a lot of use for land, but I feel the same way about time.  So I say to you, that if you have time, use it wisely.  Think before you obligate your time.  We all only get a certain amount of time, and we don’t even know how much is allotted to each of us individually!  So, choose wisely, and remember the words of Solomon from Ecclesiastes 3:1 & 12-

1 There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven… 12 I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime;

Since there is a proper time for everything and since there is nothing better for us than to spend our time rejoicing and doing good, let’s use the time that we have as best we can.

Much Love,
