Around the Next Corner

Some of the most common phrases I’ve said in my adventuring life are, “Let’s just see what’s around the next corner,” or “Let’s not turn back now, we might miss something great that’s just ahead.”

There may be some different variations of that same sentiment, but the motivating force is the same every time, no matter how it’s said.

The great unknown is one of the driving forces in my life.  It’s not just a force in my life though, it’s one that’s common among many.

If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t explore.  And even those who don’t explore themselves will be captivated by movies about exploration and treasure hunting.  There are even many reality shows about exploration; Exploration of the depths of the oceans, rainforests, deserts, caves and the excavation of lost civilizations, battlefields and ship wrecks.

But what is everyone looking for?  What do I want so desperately to find around the next corner?

I think that all of the exploration of the unknown, no matter what form it takes, is just our way of searching for God.  No, I don’t think we comprehend it, but I think that at the core of our curiosity is a desire for God.

Even the band U2 sings in one of their most famous songs, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” these famous lines:

I have climbed the highest mountains

I have run through the fields

But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

Interestingly enough, these words are in the same song,

                You broke the bonds

                And you loosed the chains

Carried the cross of my shame

But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for

Now, I’m not trying to make U2 out to be theologians, and I wouldn’t look to anyone in the secular world for theological understanding, but I only use the words of this song as an example of the common search of mankind for something, or rather, someone, who, though we can know him, we will not meet him until our life is over or until he returns.  I’m of course talking about Jesus.

I’m fascinated by the unknown, but the greatest of unknowns and the one that I’m most fascinated with is Jesus.  Yes, we can know Jesus some in this life, but not completely.  Even Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:12 – 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully…

Some day we will see him perfectly clear and in our seeing Him the things that we now can only know in part will be revealed.  No more mystery.  Some day we will find who we’re looking for.  So keep looking and watching and waiting with anticipation.  Some day, around the next corner, will be Jesus.

Much love!
