My favorite Biblical topic is the exploration of God’s sovereignty. I would consider myself a big sovereignty guy, which is opposed to the little sovereignty guy.
What do I mean? Let me begin with a definition I like of God’s sovereignty, from a theologian that I also like: the biblical doctrine that God is the supreme, absolute ruler and controller of all creation, possessing the authority and power to ordain or allow all events according to His wise, just, and purposeful will. It means nothing happens outside His governance, ensuring His ultimate purposes are never thwarted.
If you buy in to all of that, which I highly recommend that you do, not because it’s what I believe, but rather because it is the way the Bible presents God – if you buy in, you too will be a big sovereignty guy or gal.
I understand that there are loads of terrible things, tragic things, that happen in life – some of those things have even happened to me and people that I love – however, I also believe in God’s ability to right all wrongs, fix all problems, and re-make anything broken a million times better than it ever was when it was in its greatest form upon this earth.
Having said that, allow me to focus upon another characteristic of big sovereignty people – we believe that if you are here today, there is divine purpose behind your presence. In other words, we believe that, whether you realize it or not, God brought you here today for His purposes, which are likely too great to comprehend.
But sometimes God’s purposes aren’t so hard to comprehend. For instance, maybe you’re looking for a church home and God brought you here to join us. Or maybe you’ve been struggling with sin, and God brought you here to place you with people and resources that can help. Or maybe you’ve felt a silent urging, or not so silent urging to be faithful to the God who created you, and God brought you here for that purpose.
God is in control. If He’s not in control, He’s not God.
Why are you here today? Maybe you don’t even fully know or understand why – but God does. While you are here today, an encouragement from me to you: Seek Him! If you do, He will allow you to find Him – He is what you need most, whether you know it or not.
For our good and His glory!
