Big Surprises

I love big surprises.  No, not the traditional idea of a big surprise, like a party or an extravagant present, those are nice as well, but just not what I mean. I love it when God surprises me because He does it in the most unexpected ways.

For instance, at a time in my life when I was living in sin, struggling with addictions, I just knew that if I confessed my sin and sought help, that it would ruin my life.  You see, that’s just how satanic influence works in this world. Satanic influences whisper in your ear to not do what will help you, but to continue in secrecy doing what will only harm you more.

It was a time in my life that, praise the Lord, I listened to what God was telling me to do instead of what I thought was best.  What was God telling me to do?  Through James 5:16, God was saying to me, …confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed…

I had confessed to God, but I had not confessed to any of my brothers in Christ.  I had forgiveness, but I did not have healing – and there’s a big difference between the two.

When I finally confessed, every terrible unknown thing that I thought would happen, didn’t.  I had worried for no reason.  But not only did nothing terrible happen, the exact opposite happened, I found true healing and instead of rejection, I found support from my Christian family, resulting in a happiness that I dared not dream was possible.  I love surprises like that.  The surprises that God brings into my life that only He can bring, like the pure happiness that is only experienced by following His instructions for my well-being.

Another one of the biggest surprises from God that I have experienced has come after doing any kind of mission/service.

There was a time in my life that I thought that to feel refreshed and recharged, that I had to go on a vacation.  I was left perplexed when, after vacationing, not only did I not feel refreshed and recharged, but I instead felt the opposite.

Long story short, I discovered that what makes me feel the most refreshed and recharged, what filled me with most happiness, contentment and fulfillment, was doing something for someone OTHER than myself.

Happiness that comes from God doesn’t make logical sense.  I’m not asking you to take my word for it, instead I’ll simply repeat the words of Psalm 34:8 – O taste and see that the Lord is good!

For our good and His glory!
