Advanced Abraham

In the fourth chapter of Romans, which we begin to study this week, Paul gives us an in-depth look at the theology behind the man of faith, Abraham.

Of all of the examples that Paul could have used to illustrate salvation, he chose Abraham, which I love.

There are several reasons that I like the choice of Abraham, but the one that I like best is the humanness of Abraham.  Over the many years that Abraham lived before Paul, the Jewish leaders had exalted Abraham to a place higher than he deserved, with some writers going so far as to make him out to be sinless.

However, even a cursory study of Abraham’s life shows that he was far from perfect, and, as a matter of fact, was a lot like you and me.  It is true that he demonstrated an admirable faith, and that is to be emulated by us, but not all is to be emulated.

He also sinned, and we can learn from his mistakes as well.

Among other things, we will see Paul emphasize that salvation has always been the same.  From the time of Abraham all the way to present day, God still operates the same way.

As we study the fourth chapter of Romans, I challenge you to see what insights you might gain afresh from the life of Abraham and see just how much he has in common with us, even today.

For our good and His glory!
