And the Answer Is…

Have you ever been asked a question in Sunday school class and have no clue what the answer is?  My wife says that when that you’re asked a question at church and you don’t know the answer to pick from one of the following:

  1. God
  2. Jesus
  3. The Holy Spirit
  4. The Bible

She theorizes that one of those is bound to be correct most of the time.  Of course, she’s saying that in jest, but there is some truth to the joke.

I don’t know how many times I’ve encountered someone with a problem – a serious spiritual problem – and the response given to them was along these lines:

“Pray more.”

“Read the Bible more.”

“Go to church more.”

Praying is good and reading the Bible is good and going to church is good, but in and of themselves, they are seldom good answers when people are seeking guidance.

So what am I saying?  Simply this – You and I need to know the Bible. 2 Timothy 4:2-4 says this:

…be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. (emphasis mine)

Paul is saying to be ready for questions and have great patience when you answer people.  We are living in the time that Paul describes.  People do not put up with sound teaching today, but instead find someone who says what they want to hear.  Our job is to be ready to tell people the truth, again, with great patience, so people hear what they need to hear which is not necessarily what they want to hear.

Don’t worry about what their reaction will be to the truth.  That’s between them and God.  So, in summary…Read the Bible more! Ha! I couldn’t resist.

Much Love,
